Call for Speakers

WordCamp Jinja will bring together developers, designers, writers, content creators, entrepreneurs, educators, students, community organisers, and open-source enthusiasts from Uganda and beyond.

This year’s theme, “Embrace Creative Currents on the Nile,” celebrates the ideas, experiences, and people shaping the web from Jinja and across our wider community. We are looking for practical lessons, honest stories, fresh perspectives, and creative ideas that can help our attendees learn, grow, and build meaningful connections.

You do not need to be a famous expert or an experienced conference speaker to apply. Whether this would be your first time on stage or you have spoken at many events before, your experience may be exactly what someone in our audience needs to hear.

What can you speak about?

We welcome talks that are connected to WordPress, open source, creativity, technology, business, education, AI, and community.

Possible topics include:

WordPress Development and Technology

  • WordPress development, themes, plugins, and block building
  • Performance, security, maintenance, and troubleshooting
  • APIs, headless WordPress, automation, and integrations
  • Artificial intelligence and its practical use in WordPress
  • Hosting, cloud technologies, and modern development workflows
  • Accessibility and building inclusive websites
  • Open-source tools and emerging web technologies

  • Content strategy, storytelling, and editorial workflows
  • Search engine optimisation
  • Social media and community engagement
  • Email marketing and audience development
  • Using WordPress to build a personal or professional brand
  • Responsible content creation in the age of AI

Business and Careers

  • Building and managing a WordPress business
  • Freelancing, pricing, proposals, and working with clients
  • Running an agency or managing remote teams
  • Creating products, services, and online businesses
  • Career development and finding opportunities in technology
  • Lessons from successful projects—and projects that did not go as planned
  • Using technology to solve local challenges

Community, Education and Social Impact

  • Growing local technology and WordPress communities
  • Teaching WordPress and digital skills
  • Student programmes, mentorship, and career pathways

  • Making technology accessible in communities with limited resources

These suggestions are not a limit. We would also love to receive an idea that does not fit neatly into one of these categories.

Session formats

You may apply for one of the following formats:

Standard Talk

A presentation of approximately 30 minutes, followed by time for questions.

This format is suitable for sharing a case study, practical process, technical subject, professional lesson, or community experience.

Workshop

A practical, hands-on session of approximately 60 to 90 minutes in which attendees learn by following along or completing an activity.

Workshop proposals should clearly describe what attendees will do, what they will learn, and whether they need to bring a laptop or install anything beforehand.

Joint Talk

Two speakers may apply to present a session together. Please submit one application and include the details of both speakers.

What makes a strong proposal?

A strong proposal should:

  • Have a clear and specific title
  • Explain what the session will cover
  • Identify the intended audience
  • Describe what attendees will learn or be able to do afterwards
  • Focus on practical knowledge rather than promoting a product or service
  • Be based on real experience, research, or useful examples
  • Be understandable to the audience it is intended to serve

What selected speakers receive

Selected speakers will receive:

  • A complimentary ticket to WordCamp Jinja 2026
  • A speaker profile on the event website
  • Promotion of their session through our communication channels
  • Guidance from the organising team as they prepare their talk
  • Access to the speaker orientation session
  • An invitation to the speaker dinner
  • The opportunity to connect with the WordPress community in Jinja

You may submit more than one idea, but please complete a separate application for each proposed session.

International Speakers Welcome

While we especially encourage voices from Jinja and the region, international speakers are always welcome. The best events happen when indigenous and local energy meets global perspectives.

Presentation language: English is the communication language for WordCamp Jinja and all presentations will be in English to keep the experience accessible for all attendees and speakers.

Application deadline: 1st August, 2026

Before submitting your speaker proposal, please log in to WordCamp.org using your WordPress.org account*.

If you don’t have an account, please create one.

* This is your account for the official WordPress.org website, rather than your personal WordPress site.
